An open letter to Rick Santorum and other republican candidates,
Rick,
About 50 years ago the United States had the exact same debate that we are having today, only replace gays with African Americans. Today, we look back on the civil rights movement and are appalled that it was even a problem and an issue that needed to be handled and protested. And I can only hope that in 50 years people look back and are just as disgusted with people like yourself. You are more than welcome to believe whatever it is you choose to believe, that the beauty of the first amendment, you have the right to freedom of religion. I encourage that. I encourage you to love Jesus with all your heart and to attend church seven days a week if that’s what you wish. However, I also encourage you to remember that every other person in this country has the right to their own belief system as well.
It is our unalienable right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. You cannot argue that and if you do, please step out of any form of public office, and out of this country while you’re at it. Nobody has ever said that my pursuit of happiness has to look like yours or be in anyway parallel to it and the same for yours to mine. Here’s the thing I think you’re missing, YOUR pursuit of happiness and of the presidential office cannot and should not under any circumstances stand in the way of MY rights to life liberty and pursuit of MY happiness. My sex does not change that. My sexual orientation does not change that. My political officiation does not change that. My religion does not change that.
The fact of the matter is that as a potential candidate for the presidency, your opinions and choices affect every single American. They affect the way we are viewed by the international community and how we all live our day to day lives. While you are making policies and statements and campaigning your hear out remember that the constitution is never below you and you must always hold it and its laws above yourself. If not, your second day of office may very well be an impeachment hearing on the Senate floor.
Thank You.
